SANDIPAN CHAKRABORTY

Principal Research Scientist

Dr. Sandipan Chakraborty
Associate Principal Research Scientist, CIMPS

Dr. Sandipan Chakraborty obtained bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, then pursued master’s degree in Bioinformatics. He did Ph.D. in Biophysics, Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics. He also spent research tenures in several national and international research institutes of repute. During his tenure in the Laboratory of computational Biophysics and Bioengineering, Tougaloo College, MS, USA, he worked on peptide designing to target the dimer interface of ERα. In his post-doc tenure at the Indian Association for the cultivation of Science (IACS), India, he worked on understanding the molecular mechanism of ice recognition by antifreeze proteins.

His group uses GPU-enabled high-performance computation as a tool to understand the structure and dynamics of biological macromolecules and biopolymers. Using extensive all-atom molecular dynamics simulation and novel algorithms for free energy landscape computations, they do computational microscopy to elucidate the structural rationale of the functional dynamics of proteins and protein complexes. The structural insights obtained from computer simulations are used for structure-guided rational engineering of proteins with improved function and stability. Also, the group works on computer-aided drug discovery/repurposing to identify new lead molecules against different targets of therapeutic significance and characterize the mechanism of drug action.
